Designed for the exhibition Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere at the 2024 Venice Biennale, Memory Contours is a digital artwork by Joyce Joumaa that explores early 20th-century immigration procedures in the United States and the criteria for admission to the so-called “land of freedom.” For its first collaboration with the artist, Generique Design developed a custom physical support to present the work within the Central Pavilion.
The installation includes four structures, each combining a screen, a lightbox, and a structural column. Inspired by the functionalist design of signage systems in port arrival areas, the units are made of black powder-coated aluminum, offering a minimal aesthetic that highlights the visual content.
Each column is anchored to the floor and fastened to the technical ceiling structure—over four metres high—ensuring both stability and discretion. All power cables are concealed within the columns to preserve the clarity of the lines.
Generique Design provided industrial design, technology integration, and supervised fabrication while supporting the artist throughout the creative process—contributing to the refined presentation of this powerful work marking Joyce Joumaa’s debut at the Venice Biennale.
