Balancing Act is an interactive sculpture conceived as a full-body musical interface, installed in a public space in Charlotte, North Carolina. Designed for solo, duo, or trio play, the work invites participants to balance on large pivot-mounted discs, triggering notes and melodies through their movements.
Generique Design was responsible for the industrial and mechanical design, technology integration, and supervision of fabrication and prototyping for the three interactive discs, each measuring 68 inches in diameter. The welded aluminum structure rests on a central pivot using an automotive universal joint, combined with a pneumatic damping system to ensure smooth, safe, and controlled motion.
The multicoloured platform is made of reinforced fibreglass, with a polyurethane-protected edge to withstand heavy use in outdoor environments. Each tilt triggers a note, each extended movement creates a melody, and maintaining balance synchronizes the soundscape—offering a playful and collaborative musical experience.
Balancing Act transforms public space into a sensory playground, blending play, balance, and collective sound creation.
