Loop is an interactive installation composed of 12 giant zoetropes, designed to animate public spaces through the poetry of mechanical movement. Based on a concept developed by EKUMEN, Generique Design was responsible for the industrial design, mechanical design, and technology integration of these structures, combining robustness, lightness, and precise motion.
Each zoetrope, measuring approximately 8 feet in diameter, invites visitors to sit and operate a hand crank. This unique mechanism, inspired by the rhythmic movement of a horse’s gait, sets a drum of images into rotation, synchronized with stroboscopic LED lighting. The interaction creates the illusion of animations inspired by Quebec literary works, illustrated by local artists and accompanied by original sound compositions.
Built from powder-coated aluminum, stainless steel, thermo-formed ABS, and polycarbonate, the modules are levelable, anchorable, and easily transportable by forklift. The rolling quality and hand-crank ergonomics were carefully calibrated to ensure smooth, accessible use for visitors of all ages.
Loop offers a lively encounter between literature, visual arts, and mechanical engineering in the public space.
