Ad Astra is a public artwork installed in the CHUM library in Montreal, created by the Société des Archives Affectives (Fiona Annis and Véronique La Perrière M.). The installation explores the connection between art, science, and collective memory through a series of messages sent toward the stars. Gathered from the hospital community, these thoughts are transformed into astral images using a process involving neuroscience, forming a constellation of human emotions.
Generique Design was commissioned to design and produce three custom wall-mounted structures, integrating lightboxes, video displays, fibre optic light points, and an illuminated display case. The entire installation is carefully aligned with the materiality of the site while maintaining a strong poetic presence. Special attention was given to technological integration, maintenance ergonomics, and strict compliance with hospital standards.
The panels are equipped with lift supports to facilitate maintenance, while the choice of materials—steel, aluminum, lacquered MDF, and walnut—ensures both durability and a sense of visual warmth. Ad Astra embodies a sensitive dialogue between memory, hope, and technology in a space dedicated to healing and reflection.
